Exploring the Intersection of Creativity: An Interview with Lada Egorova
"The more you apply to things the more opportunities will arise, apply everywhere, be everywhere, at some point people will notice you. You have to keep going, keep creating, even when you got rejected many times. You have to learn not to take it personally and have hope that other opportunities will come for you."
The Visionary Behind the Camera: Lada Egorova
The world of filmmaking continues to be enriched by the voices of emerging talents, and one of the most promising is Lada Egorova
Her work is a testament to the power of storytelling from a unique perspective. The Russian- French filmmaker is now based in Los Angeles and creating a buzz throughout the industry.
CSU honors promising filmmakers across the university with its prestigious Media Arts Festival Awards.
Cal State LA alumna, ‘22, Lada Egorova was inspired to write the screenplay in part by her upbringing. She was born in Russia and immigrated to France when she was four years old, and she says returning to Russia to visit relatives was always a culture shock.
“I kind of gave up my Russian culture—I even told my mom: ‘No, we’re in France. Let’s talk just French,’” she says. “But there was always the question of how to balance two cultures and still appreciate your Russian culture even though you’re not there anymore.”
Egorova wants to shine a light on the Slavic community, which she says is often underrepresented or misrepresented in American entertainment. “There’s not really a show that depicts Russian culture in a real way. We’re not all stereotypical villains or spies,” she jokes.

MEET LADA EGOROVA | FILMMAKER AND PHOTOGRAPHER
"I’ve learned that you could wait all your life for the right opportunity or the right moment to come to make your project, but chances are you’ll wait forever. It’s better to create something now, even if it’s imperfect and not how you imagined it exactly because you don’t have the means that you wanted. But at least you created something, you have something to show and to learn from."

"Your biggest fans will be the friends/collaborators you make along the way. If you see them as teammates and not competitors, you’ll be able to grow your career through their help. Many times, someone recommended me, or I recommended someone I knew for a job. This industry works a lot on referrals, people will most likely hire someone that has been referred by someone they know rather than a stranger who submitted their resume. So, give to your circle and it will give back to you."
CONVERSATIONS WITH LADA EGOROVA
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had to go through many ups and downs, countless times I wanted to give up, I was exhausted but many times I was also reminded why I love being in the artistic fields so much. Filmmaking and photography can feel very lonely at times, particularly the writing part and the editing. You go through lots of moments of doubt. For film production, things never go as expected, you constantly have to solve problems and accept that the vision you have in your head will not always be what the final result be.
Another struggle I had to face with filmmaking is being able to make my projects in a reasonable budget as most of my projects were auto-produced and financed. But it also teachers you to be more creative in the way you make your art, you have to find other ways to find money to create than if you had a big budget.
Many times I had doubts about my skills as an artist but having supportive friends and family is what helped me go through all these hard times.
